For both men and women, wearing a hat is chic, practical and stylish, but the only hat with a protected designation of origin is the Panama!
As early as 1881, in Ecuador, workers on the Panama Canal discovered the extraordinary qualities of these local hats and popularized them in Europe and the USA, calling them “Panama hats.”
Contrary to popular belief, “Panama” is not a hat shape, but a material and weave from Ecuador. It can therefore be produced in all the classic forms for hat-making for men and women.
The weaving of Panama hats is done entirely by hand, using the fibers of dried palm leaves. There are different types of Panama hat material. The three best known are Panama Cuenca (woven in a seated position), Brisa, and Panama Montecristi (woven standing, leaning over the work). Montecristi Panamas are known to be the finest and lightest, with the tightest weave and the most regular stitching.
At Maogany, we choose each Panama hat collection once per year, and we work with “By Paquitam,” a small local artisan. This is how we can guarantee the hats’ personalization and certificate of authenticity as well as respect for the people who make them.
A very stylish accessory, easy to wear and match with our clothing collections, the Panama hat will enhance your style and protect you from the sun, both at the beach and in town.
